Hi, this is my first post here. I just found this website today.

Does anyone else out there have small twins who were born small and are having difficulty catching up???? My twins were 4 lbs 7 oz and 3 lbs 3 oz at birth (36 1/2 weeks gestation). The doctors have told me that had intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), but can't tell me why. They've both been meeting all physical and language milestones on schedule or ahead of schedule, but they're both only 16 1/2 lbs right now and they've just turned 14 months. (They've recently had a stomach bug which caused them to lose a little ground there too.) They're both very particular about what they'll eat and when. Sometimes they refuse a meal all together. One also doesn't like anything like stage 3 baby food. He will eat it sometimes, but if he gets a cold or anything, it's like going back 10 steps. We end up having to go back to Stage 2 baby food and work our way back up. He loves crackers and cheerios, but usually won't eat pasta or anything too sticky.

I'd love to hear from someone who's going through something similar, or better yet, someone who went through this already and got to a point that their twins would eat normally and were at least somewhere ON the growth scale!!!!

Thanks!

Wanted to let you know I was in the similar situation. I had twin boys born at 33 wks. My first born was born 3.1lbs and my second at 4.1oz. They were in the NICU for about 3 weeks and then we got to take them home. I wouldnt worry to much about milestones because of the fact that they were premature they will have alot of catching up to do. Right now my boys will be two in May and I believe at their last checkup they weighed 26lbs. I dont know if that is right on track for their age but the doctor said they had gained 3.5lbs since their last visit which was just perfect...not less or too much weight so we were feeding them the correct amount. (these are first and it felt like we were not feeding them enough as well) All I can say is that they will go through some amazing growth spurts where they will eat one week and then not eat the next week hardly at all.. I do know my boys did not eat the gerber 3's at all and prefered the 2nd staged vegtables. We did that for awhile since they would still eat them and slowly introduced table food. I can tell you now they are eating us out of house and home and it will not take long for yours either Feel free to write me anytime.

Thanks for the reassurance! I don't think I'd be half as worried if the doctor wasn't making me so crazy! He focuses so much on the IUGR stuff!! Just when I relax and decide they're going to grow at their own pace, seems like something comes up from the doctor or a friend that makes me feel like I should be doing more. Did your doctor do tests on your boys to see why they were growing slowly? I think maybe he's more worried because of their history of IUGR. I worry I won't do something they need and they'll have to suffer the consequences. It's so hard to know what to do when you don't know all the options and information you could have. I hope mine start taking off with their eating like yours did. I look forward to that day!! Of course, then I'll probably be complaining about them going through food so quickly !!!

Thanks again! It's nice to hear from someone who's gone through something similar!!
