I'm sorry you had to go through that. My twins were preemies at 32 weeks, in the hospital for a month. After being home 2 weeks one of them stopped breathing (thank GOD for Apnea Monitors) so she was hospitalized. She had outgrown her medication dose for her severe reflux. After 5 days in the hospital she was released, the same night we brought her home, her twin stopped breathing and ended up in the hospital for 5 days with the exact thing.
When RSV season came around in October they were only 4 months old, but due to their history our Pediatrician advised they get RSV shots. The Insurance company denied it. On New Years Eve both babies had such difficulty breathing we had to admit them. They were in the hospital for 5 days with RSV. After that they were given the RSV shots for the remainder of the season, but it could have been avoided totally if the Insurance Company would have allowed it in October. This was in winter 2001-2002. In October of 2002 the Pediatrician suggested again that they get RSV shots (preemies that were intubated should get the shots until they are 2 since they are the most at risk), and once again the Insurance Company denied it. We are grateful that they made it through the season safely, but every cold they got threw us into a complete panic. I have 2 preschool aged children as well so I was constantly in a state of panic that they would bring the virus home. It was a difficult time and I wish that Insurance Companies would pay the cost for vaccinations rather than taking risks with childrens lives. My twins have not shown signs of asthma, but we were warned that the possiblity is there and is something we should always be aware of.
All of us need to push a little harder when Insurance denies things that our Pediatricians say are necessary - and we also need to help spread the word on how dangerous RSV is!
